Student Tips: Things to Bring to Kuala Lumpur

After getting accepted into your dream university in Kuala Lumpur, you have to start preparing before you travel there. Some of the things you need to do during pre-flight preparation include packing the things you need to bring as a student abroad.

Here are some tips and information on the things to bring to Kuala Lumpur.

What Type of Clothes Should You Bring?

Do not bring a lot of clothes when you travel to Kuala Lumpur. This is because you can just buy most of your clothes while already in there. Aside from malls selling well-known brands of clothes, there are also many markets and warehouses you can go to, to get them for cheaper prices.

Moreover, many clothing stores and malls offer sales throughout the year. So, in case you want to save more money, you can wait for them instead.

However, you still need to pack clothes to use during your first few weeks, and during some events in Kuala Lumpur.

Here are the clothes you should pack:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Lightweight and comfortable clothes (ex: light wool)
  • Shirts and shorts
  • A pair of loose-fitting pants
  • Formal clothing for formal events

Moreover, since the majority of the people in Malaysia are Muslim, avoid the following:

  • Very short skirts or shorts for women
  • Clothing with pigs printed on them

Important Documents

As an international student, there may be instances when you have to prove your identity as an international student, including the duration of your stay in Kuala Lumpur.

That is why you must bring documents proving those things while in Kuala Lumpur. Also, do not forget to photocopy them (at least 2 to 3 copies per item for easy access.

The top documents (original and photocopies) you need to pack are the following:

  • Flight tickets
  • Passport
  • Letter of visa (VDR)
  • Other supporting ID cards, such as a driver’s license
  • Letter of acceptance from your institution
  • School transcripts if applicable

Be sure to put them in a place you can easily access, such as a plastic envelope, which you can put in your carry-on bag, or luggage.

Which Gadgets Should You Bring?

You can choose to buy your own gadgets in Kuala Lumpur or bring ones that you already own.

Some of the most important gadgets and tech you should bring to Kuala Lumpur are:

  • Your own laptop with a charger
  • Your own smartphone with a charger
  • A small camera (if you want to have visual remembrance of your pretty memories during your stay in Kuala Lumpur)
  • Universal adapter

Other Things to Bring

To make your stay in Kuala Lumpur more comfortable, and memorable, Here are other things you should also bring:

Journal – Journaling can help you easily remember things, improve your mood, prioritize your concerns, set goals, and practice your writing.

Also, it keeps memories fresh, which is something you may want to revisit once in a while when you are already back in your home country.

Moreover, there may be instances where you have to write your experiences as a student abroad. Revisiting your journals can help you with that.

Backpack – Bring a decent backpack with you, especially if aside from Kuala Lumpur, you also want to visit other cities and regions in Malaysia.

Backpacks are the easiest to bring, and also help make packing for many students easier.

Those are the main things you need to bring to Kuala Lumpur to start your journey as an international student.
