Guide to Student Accommodations in Dubai

Dubai, a cosmopolitan city in the UAE, and known for its strong oil industry is also a top study destination for many international students worldwide.

Before choosing a place to stay during your whole study abroad journey, you should first take into consideration some factors. Those factors include cost, location, and safety.

Regarding the cost of international students’ accommodation options in Dubai, expect expensive rents and utilities. For example, renting a one-bedroom place in the city center may already cost around AED 5,528.59 (USD 1,505.12) per month. Moreover, utilities may cost around AED 666.27 (USD 181.39).

When it comes to location, the best location is usually the ones near the school and other services such as the hospital and police station. However, accommodations near these services also tend to become more expensive than the ones outside the city center.

In terms of safety, Dubai is relatively a safer place than many other cities in the world. In fact, in the latest Global Peace Index, the UAE ranked as one of the safest places in the world. It even ranked higher than many countries in Europe such as the UK, Greece, and France.

Getting a Scholarship in Dubai

Dubai may have a higher cost of living than many countries in Asia, but living there is still much cheaper than living in other major cities such as Hong Kong, New York, and London.

Moreover, for many international students who cannot afford the city’s cost of living and rent, it is advised that they apply for a scholarship that can help them pay for their daily needs and even rent costs. Scholarships in Dubai may come from its government, or educational institutions themselves.

Student Accommodations in Dubai

Just like in other academic systems in the world, students have the choice to live on-campus or off-campus in Dubai.

On-Campus Accommodation

On-campus accommodations in Dubai include apartments and hostels and it varies depending on an institution’s fee policies. Also, they are a popular choice for many international students and local students. Thus, it will be wise to inquire and reserve a room as soon as you get your acceptance letter from your school.

Each room in on-campus accommodations can be shared or used by one person. Also, take note that accommodations in Dubai separate men and women. This is due to the country’s conservative nature due to its religion. However, most accommodations reflect the country’s modernity.

Costs in on-campus accommodations also vary. At the University of Wollongong in Dubai, for example, accommodations cost around AED 4,500 to 13,750 a month and may be shared or not.

Private Accommodations

For those who want to experience more freedom or didn’t have the chance to apply for on-campus accommodation. There are also a lot of private accommodations that international students can inquire about. Those off-campus accommodations in Dubai usually consist of one-, two- or three-bedroom apartments. These apartments may cost around AED 3,700 to 12,000 a month.
